A few customer-friendly facts about Nikwax!

It’s time to pass on the knowledge of Nikwax to your customers – let them know all the great things our products can do to help them stay safe and dry outdoors, and they will keep coming back to your store to replenish their aftercare!

So, what are the things your general customer may not know about Nikwax?

Tech Wash® is one of our biggest and best sellers!
It is also a leading aftercare product within the outdoor sector. Why? Because first and foremost, it does what it is there to do – clean and enhance the performance of wet weather clothing and gear.

Customers may think they can buy a new waterproof jacket and simply wash it in their normal detergent when it gets dirty. When they go to wear it again and find it is not repelling water as it once did, they may believe they have bought a poor jacket. But that is not the case! They simply need to clean it with the correct product – Tech Wash!

Whilst regular household detergent will clean away dirt, it will also leave residues on fabric that attract water. This goes against the whole purpose of an item being waterproof! Tech Wash is formulated to thoroughly clean away all dirt and contaminants on wet weather clothing and equipment, plus, it will not leave behind anything on the fabric that will attract water. Instead, this excellent product will also revive the durable water repellent coating on outdoor gear to ensure it continues to effectively repel rain, stay breathable so moisture inside can escape, and keep the wearer snug and dry.

Lastly, it can help your customers save money! This is because they do not need to re-proof their garment after each wash. Tech Wash is so effective they should be able to wash items 4-6 times before re-proofing is required. Bonus!

Nikwax products are safe for the user and the environment.
Being an outdoor company, we pride ourselves on manufacturing products that are Low Impact. In a time where climate change and environmental issues are on the agenda more than ever before, it is vital for customers to know that our products are safe and that our commitment to the environment never waivers.

How are they safe?
Nikwax does not use hazardous chemicals, aerosols, or materials (such as palm oil) that could be sourced by unsustainable methods. All products are water-based and biodegradable. We are the only outdoor company to have never used PFCs in our products. These are nasty persistent chemicals that can cause harm to both humans and the environment; so why would we choose to use something that will damage the natural world that we all want to enjoy? Quite simply, we don’t and never have. Plus, by the end of 2020, 100 percent of all Nikwax bottles will be manufactured from post-consumer recycled plastic!

Nikwax is more than waterproofing.
Our range extends beyond simply cleaning and waterproofing outdoor clothing, and now is a great time to let your customers know this and introduce them to the rest of our range!

Next time you have a customer wishing to purchase some base layers for their cycling, running or gym activity, let them know about Nikwax Sweatproofing. The Sweatproofing range cleans, conditions and deodorises all technical next-to-skin clothing and non-waterproof footwear.

Customers who wear base layers may already experience the issue of their clothing starting to smell over time, through use. It is important for them to realise when they purchase a new base layer that washing it in regular detergent and conditioner will cause problems with the fabric’s wicking. These detergents and conditioners leave behind residues that will prevent the garments from effectively evaporating sweat, so moisture is unable to spread over a large area and dry. Combined with a build-up of body oils, it leads to ineffective clothing. Detergent will initially mask any smells when washed, but it will not actually remove the bacteria and body oils.

The Nikwax Sweatproofing range has been created to tackle these problems! Cleaners, such as BaseWash® and Wool Wash, swiftly remove all dirt and body oils from the fabric and will actively prevent the build-up of odours. The high performance formulations will enhance the wicking of a base layer, so sweat spreads quickly and dries fast – this all helps to regulate body temperature, which is key for many high energy activities.

The wash-in conditioner, BaseFresh®, is designed to actually work with a household detergent! This is because it allows the detergent to clean away dirt, while preventing the detergent from impairing the properties of a base layer. Instead, BaseFresh will deodorise the fabric and, as with the other Sweatproofing products, will enhance wicking and prevent odour build-up.

But, don’t forget the shoes! We all know how non-waterproof shoes can start to smell over time, plus, customers may not be aware that a build-up of bacteria can actually lead to material starting to degrade, meaning that footwear may not last as long as it should! Sandal & Sports Shoe Wash is perfect here. It thoroughly cleans away all nasty bacteria from footwear and will freshen it at the same time, plus it can be used on outer fabric as well as insoles and footbeds.

Sweatproofing is the most effective way to keep sportswear, base layers and footwear smelling fresh and performing at its very best – keeping the user comfortable and dry so they can just focus on their chosen activity!

Spread the word of Nikwax and show your customers just how effective our products are and how they can enhance their enjoyment of the outdoors whilst prolonging the life of their gear.

The power of Down Wash Direct®

Down jackets … They are a fabulous means by which to keep cosy and warm during colder months outdoors, but do your customers really understand about down? We know it provides a fantastic warmth-to-weight ratio, with the insulation providing great protection in freezing weather, but what about in the rain? Now is the prime time to advise them of down and the best way to care for their down jacket – with Nikwax® Down Wash Direct!

Regular down: used within a lot of garments, but this filling has no water repellency and we all know that water is an enemy of down. If down gets wet then it will rapidly lose loft, collapse and trap the water, resulting in complete loss of insulation. This could be potentially dangerous if using a down jacket (or sleeping bag) in really cold conditions when wet – the loss of insulation could, in severe cases, lead to hypothermia. Regular down can therefore limit the conditions in which someone can wear their jacket to its full potential.

Hydrophobic down: such as Nikwax Hydrophobic Down (NHD) is down that has been treated with a solution to prevent it from absorbing water. NHD is a PFC-free, water-based water repellent treatment and it has been proven to make down 50 times more resistant to water than regular down. Garments containing NHD can resist up to 16 hours of direct exposure to water and still retain their insulating properties. A huge benefit is that NHD will extend the range of conditions in which you can use a down jacket – the user stays warm, dry and protected, even in the rain!

Whether a garment uses regular or hydrophobic down, it needs to be cleaned appropriately. So advise your customers to step away from household detergent or fabric conditioner as these will leave residues that impair the down and its performance. Instead, advise them to use Nikwax Down Wash Direct – a high performance cleaner effective on both the outer fabric and the delicate properties of down filling.

How can Down Wash Direct protect my down jacket?

  • It cleans away all dirt and body oils from the outer fabric and the down fill.
  • At the same time, Down Wash Direct will revive the DWR on the outer fabric and, where applicable, on the down fill. This protects the garment against rain or condensation and prevents it from wetting out.
  • Breathability is revitalised – essential to allow any moisture vapour that builds up to escape through the item, so the wearer does not feel clammy on the inside.
  • Down Wash Direct will optimise performance and prolong the lifetime of a down jacket – it is the safest way to keep down items in prime condition.

Anything else to consider when someone washes a down jacket?

  • Be sure to use the correct wash cycle. As down gains weight when wet, it is ideal to use a gentle cycle with a slow spin to prevent any damage occurring.
  • Even if cleaned by hand, spin cycles are recommended to get the maximum amount of water out of the down.
  • Down items must be thoroughly dried before use, or being stored away. If a garment can be tumble dried then this is recommended to help dry the filling quickly – if down stays wet for some time it can be ruined.
  • Clumps should be teased apart during the drying process to help restore the loft to the down.

The simple thing to consider is that when spending out on a down jacket – which can be costly – all due care should be taken to ensure it is looked after properly. Nikwax Down Wash Direct will not let your customers down and their gear will not be compromised when they need it most!

Visor Proof and Ski Skin Proof Top Facts!

Have you heard about our Nikwax® products Visor Proof and Ski Skin Proof? No? Well, read on to learn all about them… Effective aftercare that will benefit motorcyclists and skiers, here is some info on two products developed to specifically help with some key pieces of outdoor kit.

Visor Proof

A highly effective spray-on water repellent that casts off rain from motorcycle visors and ski goggles.

The benefit to the user is enhanced vision – perfect if biking along a busy road in wet conditions where focus needs to be even sharper than normal. Motorcycle helmets are obviously one of the most important pieces of kit in order to keep riders safer on the road, so a product that can increase what they visibly see in inclement weather is a must-have!

The same applies to skiers. If snow or water gets onto the goggles, the droplets will impair vision and when flying down a mountain slope at speed, the user needs to clearly see the route ahead.

Without Visor Proof, rain can severely hamper vision and the inability to see clearly is a hazard.

Visor Proof is water-based and super easy to use!

  • Remove all surface dirt with mild soap and then rinse thoroughly.
  • Shake Visor Proof well before use.
  • At a distance of 15cm/6inches, apply 2 squirts of Visor Proof to the outside of the visor or goggles.
  • Wipe with a clean cloth in smooth strokes.
  • Rub vigorously from side to side in even strokes to ensure the product has spread across the visor or goggles.

Ski Skin Proof

A sponge-on waterproofer that repels water, prevents saturation, reduces kick and improves glide of all ski skins.

The point of the ski skin is to help ascend the slopes, without sliding straight back down them! There is a chance in thick snow conditions that ice crystals and lumps of snow form on/under the ski skin, which would affect the glue that keeps the skin attached to the ski, plus reduces the glide.

Ski Skin Proof will prevent ice build-up in the fibres of ski skins and will prolong their useable lifetime of ski skins. Plus, the product is quick and easy to use….. Let your customers know how!

  • Shake the bottle well before use, then press the sponge applicator to break the seal.
  • Apply to wet or dry ski skins whilst attached to the skis.
  • Starting at the front of the ski skin, work the product into the fibres.
  • Cover the entire ski skin and then allow to dry at room temperature.
  • Be sure to keep the adhesive side of the ski skin away from the product if treating them before gluing to the ski!

Sales Advice: Wool Wash

We all know what it’s like – you have been out for a run, got a bit hot and sweaty, then once home you peel off your base layers, pop them straight in the washing machine and press start, ready to get them clean and fresh for your next fitness session.

Stop right there! What if they are woollen base layers? Do your customers know that this fabric requires a slightly different approach to synthetic base layers?

Nikwax Wool Wash is the go-to aftercare product you need to recommend to your customers when they purchase woollen next-to-skin clothing. It provides all the necessary care these garments require, in order to keep them in prime condition and performing at their best.

Here are some top facts to pass on to your customers to help them understand the power of choosing the correct aftercare product for their gear.

Woollen base layers

  • A natural fibre, Merino wool is fantastic at wicking away sweat and keeping the user dry and comfortable. It also contains natural antibacterial properties that help to curb the build-up of odours. Because of this, merino wool can firstly be washed less than its synthetic counterparts. Bonus!
  • Merino base layers are more delicate when it comes to washing due to their natural structure and should not be washed as rigorously, but rather on a lower heat – otherwise the fibres will shrink and base layers may end up that bit tighter than they should be!
  • Standard detergents and fabric conditioners can impair the natural performance of Merino wool; a garment’s natural wicking capabilities can be masked, causing the fabric to dry slower, absorb moisture and prevent it from actively helping to regulate body temperature.

Why use Wool Wash?

  • Wool Wash is water-based, containing none of the enzymes found in standard washing and conditioning products. Those pesky enzymes can weaken wool and over time start to eat away at the fabric.
  • It cleans AND conditions at the same time! Excellent – two products in one!
  • Its formula will enhance the natural wicking found in wool, ensuring that breathability is maintained and sweat will spread easily, dry faster and keep that body temperature regulated.
  • Wool Wash deodorises as it cleans! Base layers smell fresh and the potential for any odour build-up is removed – no stinky clothing to deal with during high energy activities.
  • Woollen base layers stay soft, providing enhanced user comfort and warmth during the colder months.

Wool Wash is so easy for your customers to use!

  • Shake well before use.
  • Place garments in the washing machine and use 50ml of Wool Wash.
  • Ensure garment is washed on a cycle according to its care label.
  • Dry the garment naturally – a low tumble dry setting can be used if the care label allows.
  • The user can also apply by hand: use 25ml of Wool Wash in hand-hot water in a sink or bowl, immerse the item(s) to clean. Ensure they are rinsed 3 times in cold water before leaving to dry.

Keep your animals dry and comfortable with Nikwax aftercare

Nikwax® aftercare is formulated to safely clean and waterproof ALL animal rugs and coats, to help keep your animals warm, dry and comfortable throughout autumn and winter.

CLEAN with Nikwax Rug Wash
Effectively cleans away ALL dirt and contaminants on the fabric, revitalising its water repellency, insulation and breathability.

If water starts to be absorbed then moisture vapour is unable to escape through the fabric, resulting in the animal becoming clammy and losing warmth.

Cleaning with Rug Wash revives the durable water repellent (DWR) coating on the fabric, which keeps the animal protected in the rain and prevents moisture building up on the inside of the fabric. It is a vegetable-based soap cleaner, so is completely safe and free from any harmful chemicals.

How to use:

  • 1 x rug per washing machine load.
  • Washing machine must be large enough to allow movement of the rug in the drum.
  • Use 150ml of Rug Wash per item and wash according to the care label.
  • The rug must go through a thorough rinse cycle.
  • Rug Wash can also be used by hand. Dilute 1 part Rug wash to 2 parts water and use a brush to work the solution into the fabric. Rinse thoroughly afterwards with cold water.
  • Air-dry rugs after cleaning, or use a tumble dryer on a low setting if the care labels allows.

WATERPROOF with Nikwax Rug Proof
At least once a year, animal rugs and coats should be re-proofed with Rug Proof.

Over time the DWR coating will wear away and when Rug Wash will no longer revive the water repellency, then you know it is time to re-proof.

Rug Proof will add a new DWR coating that develops upon drying. It maintains the breathability of the item and will ultimately protect your horse in the rain. As with Rug Wash, Rug Proof is completely safe to use as it is water-based and contains no PFCs.

How to use:

  • Clean first with Rug Wash.
  • 1 x rug per washing machine load.
  • Use 500ml of Rug Proof and wash on a 30° cotton cycle.
  • Rug Proof can also be used by hand: use 500ml with 10 litres of hand-hot water. Agitate to mix and then add a further 15 litres of warm water – agitate and leave to soak for 2 hours. Rinse thoroughly afterwards in cold water.
  • Rugs can be air dried, or use in a tumble dryer on a low setting if the care label allows.

ISPO News: The Nikwax Hydrophobic Down™ Experience

To prove the superior performance of Nikwax Hydrophobic Down (NHD) over conventional down we took a group of colleagues and friends of Nikwax into the Alps, at -20 degrees temperature, to float 2 NHD sleeping bags on a lake. Head to to find out what happened.

Stay warm and dry at this year’s ISPO with Nikwax Hydrophobic Down.
Although down offers superb insulating properties, it clumps together if it gets wet, leaving you feeling cold. Nikwax’s revolutionary Hydrophobic Down is a water resistant down fill that retains loft and recovers quickly after a downpour; all without adding weight.

PFC-free, Nikwax Hydrophobic Down is environmentally safe and is already being used by trusted outdoor brands including Berghaus, Rab, Mountain Hardwear, Alpkit and Therm-a-rest.

It works by adding a flexible Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish to each individual down filament, thereby reducing the absorption of moisture – whether from the inside (perspiration, condensation) or the outside (rain and snow). It maintains its high performance loft and insulation properties in cold and damp conditions.

Wet down loses its insulating properties because water conducts heat away from the body up to 25 times faster than air
It’s also heavier and loses its breathability, resulting in a cold, wet and uncomfortable experience. But a reduction in insulation can also be dangerous and in severe cases can lead to hypothermia.

That’s why Nikwax Hydrophobic Down is the optimal down fill for sleeping bags, jackets and gilets. It’s down that has a water resistant treatment applied to it which is at least 50 times more water resistant than standard down, maintaining loft, breathability and an ability to continue to insulate.  Furthermore, because it stays moisture free, there’s less bacteria trapped inside a garment, which can result in the breakdown of damp down. This increases the useable lifetime of clothing and gear and also provides odour resistance.

Nikwax Hydrophobic Down’s radical features offer clothing manufacturers more versatility as their products can be used in a much wider variety of conditions
The increased performance of Hydrophobic Down in comparison to similar down filled garments means Nikwax treated down will continue to be effective in conditions where conventional untreated down filled items would fail.
